New research (conducted by a hotel company) says that travelers put a higher value on hotel loyalty program points.
Have hotel points surpassed frequent flier miles as the preferred currency among travelers? It certainly looks that way.
In an announcement from the InterContinental Hotels Group, which includes brands like Holiday Inn, Candlewood Suites, and Crowne Plaza, among the top trends cited by researchers is this particularly interesting one:
"Hotel loyalty program points displace airline frequent flyer miles as preferred currency: Frequent travelers place a higher perceived value on hotel loyalty program currency over frequent flier miles, as airlines' imposition of fees, decreased reward seat inventory and greater restrictions have weakened consumer trust, and as hotel programs add additional redemption options, including access to airline inventory."
Do you agree? Are hotel points more valuable than frequent flier miles?
What with certain airlines charging over $500 in fees and surcharges for passengers seeking to use miles for "free" reward flights, and even perennial customer-service favorite Southwest Airlines watering down its reward program, it'd seem to make sense that, given a choice between the two, most travelers would choose hotel points over frequent flier miles in a heartbeat.
