The mayor's office in Rome says it is looking for private investment to help build a Disneyland-style theme park with an ancient Roman theme.
"You would relive scenes from the Colosseum, from ancient Rome, gladiators or maybe Julius Caesar or other things," a Rome city official told Reuters.
We've heard this before. A decade ago, a similar idea was floated for a park, "with two-thirds scale reproductions of the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Baths of Caracalla and the Pantheon," says the London Times. The thought was that the park could double as a movie and TV set to bring in extra cash. Nothing came of it. Regulations, political in-fighting, and a proud sense of tradition over artificiality will likely stop this new plan, too.
