Deal of the Day: Historic southern Oregon for the modern savvy traveler, from $249/2 nights

Jacksonville has all the trimmings of classic small town America—boutique shops in a quaint downtown, historic architecture, and easy access to hiking and a national park. The fact that it sits in the middle of South Oregon’s beloved wine country just sweetens the deal. Typically luxury does not come cheap in this town, which is on the National Register of Historic Places because of its rich gold mining history. With this Deal of the Day, however, you can book a room for two at the quaint and cozy McCully House Inn, which is located in the oldest home in Oregon, or a private room at Wine Cottage, a sister location, for two-nights for $249 through April 29 and $279 during the month of May. (This deal is not available May 27-28) That’s a savings of more than 50% off standard rates. A 10.8% lodging tax is not included in the price.

Locals Know Best: Charleston, South Carolina

Ten years ago, when Yuriy Bekker moved to Charleston from Brooklyn, he was hit by a bolt of culture shock. But it didn’t take too long for the violinist and principal pops conductor of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra (not to mention artistic director of various music festivals and groups and globe-trotting performer), to realize that although there was more sunshine and tranquility and fewer bagel shops as well as Ukranian restaurants like the ones he grew up frequenting as the son of immigrants from Minsk, Belarus, he could feel quite at home in this jewel of a city, where cosmopolitan energy fuses with a laidback southern attitude and European charm.

Locals Know Best: Portland, Oregon

(Erica Schroeder/Dreamstime)

Portland, Oregon’s history is one of ship-building, grit, and organized crime. What a difference a century makes. Today, Portland is strongly associated with organic food, hipster eyewear, elaborate tattoos, craft beer, and artisanal everything. The dining scene is particularly alluring, offering loads of options from classical cooking to hyper-creative modern menus, not to mention the city is less than an hour from heart of Oregon’s wine country. To get a culinary insider’s tips on where to go and what to do around this city, we caught up with Cathy Whims, award-winning chef who owns a variety of restaurants, including Oven and Shaker, which is known for its wood-burning pizza oven, the modern Italian eatery Nostrana, and Hamlet, the newest entrant in her expanding empire which focuses on ham-heavy small plates, craft cocktails, and sherry. You’d think it’d be tough to find down-time when you oversee that many restaurants, but a retro steakhouse, a bird-watcher’s haven, and a visit to a Zumba class with an eccentric instructor are just a few of this long-time resident’s go-to’s.
