But we’re happy to tell you that there are a few times a year when that observation flies out the window. Right now is one of those times. New York Restaurant Week--which is actually "Restaurant Weeks" runs through February 10. It's an opportunity for you to dine like you’re splurging, except you’re not.

This is the time of year we always get a little tired of the winter grind, and the snowstorms across the country this past week sure don’t help. A nice Caribbean escape could sure come in handy right about now. Here, three of our favorite "ultimate islands" that won’t break the bank.

ANTIGUA & BARBUDA is inviting Americans to discover this elegant, beautiful pair of islands with (no kidding) 365 beaches -- yes, you could literally stay all year and never visit the same beach twice. To say the Monmouth Historic Inn, in Natchez, Mississippi, has southern charm is a little like saying Lebron James is a great athlete or Ella Fitzgerald has a good voice. In other words, its Southern charm is beyond compare. The inn, a National Historic Landmark, sits on 26 acres of fountains, ponds, gardens, and abundant oak trees and Spanish moss.

Locals Know Best: Sacramento, California

There once was a time when Sacramento was, to put it kindly, in a rut. Locals cast their gazes longingly towards San Francisco and Oakland, epicenters of creativity and culture. Enter: Unseen Heros, the lifestyles event production company they founded.

Every country wants you to come visit. Here are the slogans they use to entice you.

Tourism is a competitive business. Every destination—cities, states, nations, hotels, historical landmarks, etc.—is vying for your attention, time and money. All of which, of course, is in limited supply. But neither the time nor the money comes into play if the place doesn’t have your attention. And that’s where savvy marketing comes in. Nearly every country on this vast planet has a slogan to make you perk up and take notice and inspire you to come visit. And let’s just say some slogans have a good chance of grabbing your attention by the collar while others might float past you unnoticed with bland reminders of their beauty or friendly residents or geographic locale (Portugal, for instance, beckons with the claim “Europe’s West Coast” and Nigeria announces “Good people. Great nation.”). And others might just make you giggle or, in some cases, furry your brow in bewilderment.
