Best places to see spring flowers

Spring is on its way! And we don’t just love the longer days and the warm sun. Some of the world's best travel destinations are hotspots for beautiful spring flowers. We're here to show you where to go to see the most colorful blooms.

AMSTERDAM

Step into a Technicolor wonderland! Keukenhof Gardens, outside Amsterdam, is one of the world’s most spectacular flower gardens in April when the tulips are in bloom. Take a guided tour, or rent a bike to go exploring. Or if you really want to indulge, book one of Avalon Waterway’s Tulip Time river cruises. The Netherlands is tulip-crazy all spring long, and Budget Travel loves Amsterdam for museums filled with Van Goghs and Vermeers, its charming canals, and affordable lodging.

Deal of the Day: Unplug and find tranquility at a bucolic NJ estate inn, from $199

(Travelzoo)

Somewhere between the grand estates of the south and the remote, relaxed landscapes of New England sits New Jersey. The southern part of the state has the qualities of both, and you can see for yourself at the Woolverton Inn, which is located on a posh mansion built in 1792 set on 10 pastoral acres along the Delaware River just a 10-minute drive from charming New Hope, Pennsylvania and Lambertville, New Jersey, both charming towns filled with restaurants and shops.

Deal of the Day: Get a taste of Southern charm in New Hampshire, plus free ski passes, from $159

(Travelzoo)

Baked cheese grits, biscuits, eggs sardou, and praline bacon are not standard fare on the breakfast menu of a New Hampshire B&B, but at Follansbee Inn, which is owned by a longtime resident of New Orleans, that’s exactly what you get. Set 25 minutes from Mount Sunapee, it’s a destination for skiers, and this Deal of the Day, which is good on stays through the end of May, includes a one-day lift ticket for two on the mountain. And with 54 open trails, there are also plenty of options for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. But the B&B, adorned with all the fixings of a Southern manse, is well worth the trip beyond ski season. It’s on the shores of Kezar Lake, an ideal setting for kayaking, canoeing, and sailboating, each of which is available for free at the inn.

Locals Know Best: Baltimore

John Waters, arguably Baltimore’s most famous native son since Babe Ruth, said of his hometown: “You can look far and wide, but you'll never discover a stranger city with such extreme style. It's as if every eccentric in the South decided to move north, ran out of gas in Baltimore, and decided to stay.” Indeed, between its creative eateries, vibrant public spaces, a multitude of free city-wide events, not to mention the historic sites, Baltimore has a character that’s very much its own. We connected to with Kathy Horning, who directs Artscape, the largest free art festival in the US, the Baltimore Book Festival, and more to learn more about the extravaganzas she oversees and get her guidance on where to eat, drink, explore, and just hang out in the city she calls home.

Deal of the Day: Sheraton Grand Chicago invites you to forget your car and make it a trip to remember, from $166

While we certainly won’t say it’s balmy, by this time of year it’s safe to assume that the worst of the Chicago winter is behind us. Makes sense, then, that the city hosts some amusing festivals and events in March and April, not to mention the massive St. Patrick’s Day throw-down which includes dyeing the Chicago River green. That’s just one of the reasons why the Sheraton Grand Chicago, located on the river and within walking distance to most of Chicago’s iconic sites and lively districts, is cutting its rates through the end of April, which means you can book a room for as low as $166/night. As an added bonus, they’re dropping the $55 parking fee to…[wait for it]….$1. Yes, you read that right—a buck.

New York City still welcomes the world

When the poet Emma Lazarus wrote the words “From her beacon hand glows world-wide welcome” in her poem “The New Colossus,” in 1883, she was celebrating the impending arrival, from France, of “a mighty woman with a torch” who would become one of the city’s, and, indeed, America’s, most iconic representatives to the world. Lazarus wrote the sonnet to help raise money for the substantial pedestal on which the sculpture, “Liberty Enlightening the World,” would soon stand, on Bedloe’s Island (now Liberty Island) in New York’s harbor.

Deal of the Day: Santa Fe shows off its family-friendly side with special offerings for kids thorugh mid-April

It’s easy to think you have to plan your family’s spring break destination based on whether you’re seeking culture, adventure, or just plain relaxation. Choose a flavor, pick the place accordingly, right? Think again.

This year, hotels throughout Santa Fe are opening their arms to families with kids 12 and under with a roster of appealing enticements, free nights in some hotels not least among them. Kids FreeFest Spring Break 2017, which runs from March through mid-April, is a citywide program through which numerous attractions and businesses offer special deals to families. That encompasses everything from museums to sports and adventure attractions to art classes to dining. There’s free admission for kids at the Museum of International Folk Art as well as at the Santa Fe Children’s Museum (1 free kid ticket with each paying adult), a free manicure for kids at the Spa at Loretto, chocolate-making workshops at Cacao Santa Fe, and a free third night when your family stays for two at Inn at Santa Fe. Of course, restaurants want in on the game, too. Eateries like the French bistro L’Oliver and the very kid-friendly Five Star Burgers have free meals for the offering.
