Meliá Cozumel did not sustain any structural damage from Hurricane Wilma, but chose to seize the moment for a facelift: renovating the furniture, re-painting, and spiffing up its restaurants. The greater Cozumel area is getting back on its feet, too. 3,000 of 4,000 rooms are up and running, cruise ships in the area have resumed operations, and nearly all attractions, shops and restaurants are back in business.
The hotel's reopening special includes a welcome fruit basket, all meals, beverages (including alcohol), live music acts and shows nightly, non-motorized water sports such as kayaking and snorkeling, cooking and dance lessons. Kids up to thirteen years of age can enjoy activities at "Flintstones Land," a mini-city modeled after Bedrock.
Golf green fees at the Cozumel Country Club, an 18-hole championship course created by Jack Nicklaus Design Group, are typically $60. Guests will pay $30, saving 50 percent.
Upgrades to an ocean view are available for an extra $10 per person per night; if the stay is five nights or more, the upgrade is complimentary.
Getting There: Round-trip airfare to Cozumel, Mexico in early February is currently $367 (Mexicana) from Chicago; $383 (Mexicana) from Miami; $399 (Mexicana) from Los Angeles; $415 (multiple carriers) from Houston; $577 (multiple carriers) from New York City
