TAKE MY WORD

Author Martha McPhee on Italy

March 2006 issue |

"A couple of years ago, I visited this castle in Spongano, Italy, which had been converted into an inn called Palazzo Bacile di Castiglione. Behind gates and a wall in this nondescript town, you'll find this oasis of lemon and orange trees, with an enormous pool. Every morning we ate brioches on our patio in the hot, dry Puglia sun. And one night, the owner, Alessandro, made us a dinner of fresh fish. The scene is almost verbatim in the novel."
--Martha McPhee, whose new novel, L'America, comes out next month. One-bedroom apartments at Palazzo Bacile start at $967 weekly; 011-39/08-32-35-1131, palazzobacile.it
