The package includes round-trip airfare to Kahului airport on American or United and a five-night stay at the 13-acre ResortQuest Papakea Resort Maui, which boasts three tennis courts, two 12-hole putting greens, and a pool. Add extra nights for $115 per night. The economy-class rental car with unlimited mileage (Hertz) will give you the freedom to explore well beyond the resort--say, the historic whaling town of Lahaina or the chic boutiques of Paia, a stop along the way to Mount Haleakala. You'll also be treated to a complimentary luau.

Apple Vacations also offers a five-night package in Honolulu, with the luau but no rental car. Stay at the ResortQuest at the Waikiki Banyan from $579 from San Francisco or at the ResortQuest Waikiki Beach Hotel from $729 from San Francisco.

Before you go, check the weather forecast at BudgetTravelOnline.com, and find out about local events and attractions at the official tourism board site, gohawaii.com.

In comparison, the lowest round-trip fare we've found between San Francisco and Maui in early January is $393 (America West). For about $275 more, Apple Vacations takes care of the airfare as well as the five-night stay and car rental.
