The package includes round-trip airfare from New York to Marrakech (with a stopover in Casablanca) on Royal Air Maroc and four nights at the 224-room Atlas Medina & Spa Hotel. Located on the beautiful Avenue Hassan, walking distance from the shopping center, the hotel is complete with pampering essentials, such as a pool, sauna, Turkish bath, hot tub, hair salon, and fitness center.
You may explore the colorful city on your own for the duration of your stay, or for an additional charge join a daily tour escorted by an English-speaking guide. On your first day in Marrakech, you'll have the option of going on a half-day historical sightseeing tour of the city, visiting the Koutoubia Minaret, the Bahia Palace, the Saadian tombs and Dar Si Said Museum for an additional $34 per person. End the day with a Fantasia (or war ceremony) dinner, complete with traditional music and dance as well as staple dishes, such as tajine and couscous. (Dinner is $75 per person, not including drinks.)
On day two, for an additional $95 per person, you can go on a full-day excursion by motor coach across the High Atlas mountain chain to the city of Ouarzazte, the movie capital of Morocco, where the mountains meet the desert. Along the way, you'll visit the famous fortified city of Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou as well as the beautiful former residence of the pasha of Marrakech.
The last day of the trip will offer a morning tour of the year-round lush Ourika Valley along the Ourika River for $40 per person. Hidden by exquisite mountain peaks, the valley is home to the Berbers, who have populated the area for millenia and are famous for their carpet-making skills.
Marrakech is the most popular Moroccan destination in January and February because of its mild temperatures which average around 65 degrees Fahrenheit. For more information on what to see in Morocco, especially for independent explorers, go to visitmorocco.org.
What Makes This a Deal? In comparison, the lowest round-trip airfare we found between New York and Marrakech is $563 (multiple carriers) in January. Nightly rates at the Atlas Medina start at $134 for a double room or $536 for four nights, which comes to $1,099. For the same price, Friendly Planet covers the airfare and four-night stay as well as fuel surcharges (which can easily top $150 per person), hotel taxes, and all airport/hotel transfers.
