Puerto Rico, Air/3 Nights, From $617
Save more than $200 on a beachfront resort on the northwestern side of the island.
WASHINGTON, D.C.
Clustered primarily around the Tidal Basin, the cherry blossoms were given to the U.S. by Japan in 1912 as a token of friendship. This year's National Cherry Blossom Festival runs from March 31 through April 15. Events include a parade and the Smithsonian's annual Kite Festival, during which handmade kites flutter over the National Mall. A cherry blossom information trailer sits near the intersection of Independence Avenue and 17th Street; 202/547-1500.
Several local hotels are offering discounted rates or packages tailored to the festival. Keep in mind that the cheapest rates tend to be for hotels in outlying areas of Virginia and Maryland, which will likely require renting a car.
The posh 353-room Madison Hotel, located off Massachusetts Avenue in downtown, has a Cherry Blossom package including a one-night stay, chocolates at turndown, and complimentary parking from $229 per couple. When: Mar. 30-Apr. 15, 2007. Details: Hotel taxes are an additional 14.5 percent. Based on double occupancy. Contact: 800/424-8577, loewshotels.com.
If you're in the mood for a splurge, opt for the Mandarin Oriental, the only D.C. hotel overlooking the Tidal Basin. Rates start at $379 per couple--about 35 percent off the typical cost of a room, breakfast, and parking. When: Mar. 23-Apr. 29, 2007. Details: Hotel taxes are an additional 14.5 percent.
