Why It's a Deal: A similar package offered by Red Stone Tours starts at $1,100 for a five-night stay, which translates to about $220 per person per night for a groups of 9-13. In comparison, the G.A.P Adventures package ($1,295 for seven nights with a group size of 8-12) averages to about $185 per person per night.
Trip Details: The package includes five nights' camping in the Canyon de Chelly and a two-night hotel stay in Cortez, Colo., at the Budget Host Mesa Verde. Located at the gateway to Mesa Verde National Park, the hotel serves as the meeting ground for your group and the starting point of your tour.
Each day will be filled with hiking adventures, starting the day after your arrival. You'll be picked up from your hotel and, after a brief orientation, dropped off at the Canyon de Chelly, where you'll set up camp. You'll descend into the canyon and spend six days exploring it, starting with a daylong hike (9-10 miles round trip) to the base of Spider Rock on day three.
Each excursion is accompanied by stories shared by your Navajo guides about the roles each visited place plays in their mythology. And evenings are filled with Navajo cultural shows and traditional pastimes.
Day four will consist of a moderate hike (6-7 miles round trip) to visit the large and popular White House Ruin, where you'll encounter Navajo vendors showcasing their crafts.
Though the hike to the canyon rim along White Sands Trail on day five is steep and demanding, the panoramic views of the sheer, red sandstone cliffs are well worth it. With only of a short morning walk and leisurely afternoon, day six offers much-needed rest before the hike back up to the rim, where the van will be waiting to take you back to Cortez.
Getting There: Airfare is not included. A recent search on Sidestep showed that the lowest round-trip fares to Cortez in May are $381 from Los Angeles (United), $384 from Miami (multiple carriers), $451 from New York (United), and $617 from Chicago (Frontier).
