Why It's a Deal: This package price is about half the actual value of its components, according to the ASA. It also includes perks that you wouldn't have access to if you planned the trip independently, including the welcome and goodbye parties, the BBQ, goodie bags and hats, and the weeklong opportunity to sail on Sunsail Club Colonna's premium 40-foot charter yachts.
Trip Details: The American Sailing Week 2007 package includes a seven-night stay at the Colonna Sailing Resort Antigua and six days of instruction (101 Basic Keelboat Certification and 110 Small Boat Certification) for sailors of all levels from beginning to expert led by certified ASA instructors. There are casual day sails, afternoon races, and intensive clinics on spinnakers, small boats, and two Beneteau 473 charter yachts.
Guests choose how rigorously to follow the lessons and can always opt for snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, windsurfing or sunbathing instead. Note that the package entitles participants to unlimited use of sports equipment.
Part of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean, Antigua has warm seas, a tropical climate, and a coastline of safe harbors that make it well-suited to sailing.
Getting There: A recent search on kayak.com yielded the following round-trip fares: $415 from New York City (American); $522 from Boston (American); $531 from Washington, D.C. (multiple airlines); $555 from Miami (multiple airlines); $576 from Chicago (American); and $726 from Los Angeles (multiple airlines).
