THE REAL DEALS
Myanmar Revealed
For those curious and willing to visit Myanmar, a beautiful but isolated country ruled by a repressive military junta, this two-week guided tour makes a great introduction.

Here is G.A.P's perspective: "G.A.P Adventures has made the decision to operate tours in Burma [Myanmar] out of a belief that travelers should have an opportunity to experience this country firsthand, meet its people, and potentially return home as ambassadors for positive change."

For more information on what to expect and how to prepare for the trip, check the U.S. State Department's consular sheet on Myanmar. One tip: bring cash! Local businesses typically don't accept traveler's checks or credit cards, and ATMs are nonexistent.

Getting There: By far the most expensive part of the trip will be the airfare (largely because of the low demand for travel between the U.S. and Myanmar). A recent search on kayak.com revealed the following round-trip fares for travel to Yangon in mid-May: $1,312 from New York City (Thai Airways); $1,406 from San Francisco (Singapore Airlines); $1,425 from Los Angeles (Thai Airways); and $3,877 from Chicago (Thai Airways).
