This is Michael Stern, of Jane and Michael Stern, and I am delighted to be here for the next hour chatting with you about roadside restaurants. Questions, comments, critiques, and suggestions all are welcome.

St. Louis, Missouri: Hubby and I will spend a week in St. Augustine, Florida the week of Sept. 9th, 2007. We need to know where to find a good fresh seafood restaurant, and an authentic Mexican restaurant. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks!

Jane and Michael Stern: You are in luck. St. Augustine is home of Barnacle Bill's (two branches), where you can have excellent Minorcan clam chowder (originally from the Spanish island of Minorca), spiced up with hot datil peppers (which the Minorcans brought with them when the settled) as well as beautiful, crisp-crusted fried shrimp, also available datil-pepper hot. For Mexican food, we enjoy Acapulco, with a great view of Matanzas Bay.

San Antonio, Texas: Looking for kid friendly good food, non-chain resturants between Chicago and the Wisconsin Dells

Jane and Michael Stern: Being a bar, it isn't, by definition, all that kid-friendly, but you can't beat Monk's for burgers in the Wisconsin Dells. It's where the locals go. Closer towards Chicago, stop at one of the bakeries in Racine for that great Danish pastry, kringle, and in Muckwanago at he Elegant Farmer for the world's best apple pie.

Alabama: I'm heading to New York City pretty soon and everyone tells me I should eat the pizza! Where is the best place to get a slice in New York?

Jane and Michael Stern: For whole pizzas, we like John's in Greenwich Village. In Harlem, Patsy's is a must for slices and whole pies, and just over the bridge in Brooklyn, Grimaldi's is great. In Coney Island, Totonno's is one not to be missed.

Chicago, Illinois: Do you have any favorite meals that you've had on the road that you recreate regularly at home? If so, what's the recipe? -- Regina

Jane and Michael Stern: We've brought home literally thousands of recipes from our travels, many of which have become part of our regular kitchen repertoire. While it's not a meal unto itself (although it could be!) One of the all-time favorites is this pound cake, the recipe for which came from Elvis Presley's friend Janelle McComb. Janelle said Elvis could eat an entire cake in one sitting. When you taste it, you will understand!

2 cups sugar
12 tablespoons butter, softened
5 eggs, room temperature
2 cups cake flour, sifted twice (DO NOT USE "SELF RISING" FLOUR)
2/3 cup whipping cream (not whipped)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Butter and flour a 2.2 quart Pyrex pan.
Thoroughly cream together sugar and butter.
Add eggs one at a time, beating extremely well after each addition. Mix in half the flour, then the whipping cream, then the other half of the flour. Beat five full minutes. Add vanilla.
Pour batter into the prepared pan. Set it in a cold oven and turn the heat to 350 degrees. Bake 1 hour or until a sharp knife inserted in the cake comes out clean. Cool the cake in the pan 5 minutes. Run a knife around the edges and turn it upside down to remove from the pan onto a cooling rack. Cool thoroughly. Wrapped well, this cake keeps several days.

Chicago, IL: Best BBQ: Texas or North Carolina?

Jane and Michael Stern: I'll beat around the bush and say that the best BBQ in North Carolina is at the Skylight Inn in Ayden: pit-cooked, whole-hog pork hacked to smithereens and dressed only with a dash of vinegar and hot sauce, plus salt and pepper: a pure pork epiphany. The best in Texas: fallapart-tender brisket at Louie Mueller's in Taylor. I'm not fool enough to say one is better than the other! Plus, what about barbecued mutton in Kentucky? That's good, too!

New York, NY: I'm going to Montana - around Glacier National Park. Do you have any suggestions for me? Is there a Montana specialty I should know about?

Jane and Michael Stern: Sorry, I don't have a hot tip in or around Glacier, but southeast of there, if you get to Great Falls, you must try the steaks at Eddie's Supper Club: "Taste like that Ol' Marlboro Cowboy cooked them over the campfire," says the menu. As for local specialties, this time of year you should be able to find huckleberry ice cream, milk shakes, and jam.

Albuquerque, NM: My husband & I will be on the coast of southern Maine for 2 days - Sept 19 and 20th. We will be driving from Boston and staying in the York area. We would like to make the most of our time and spend time between Portsmouth, NH to Portland, ME. I would like info about eating outside on the water at the lobster pounds I've heard so much about. All other roadside dining opportunities in the area would be welcome! Thank you, Debbie

When I'm planning a trip, I almost always call the hotel concierge before I arrive, and if my hotel doesn't have one, I call a hotel that does. Recently, I asked for advice on what to see since I only had four days in a new city. I told the concierge what I thought I should try to do, and she said I had too many things packed into four days. She gave me a list of hot spots to visit and places to avoid, and even recommended a florist to call on for fresh flowers. With her help, my trip was far more enjoyable than it would have been otherwise.

If you make a hotel reservation online and then cancel online, print out and save the cancellation confirmation for at least two billing cycles past your trip. After our vacation, I found a "no-show" charge on my credit card for a room that I'd canceled well in advance. Without the confirmation, I had no way to contest the bill.

Check out grocery stores in Europe for bargains on wine. On our last trip to Italy, I found a 1993 Banfi Brunello in a small market for $16. If I could find it at all in my local wine shop, that same bottle would cost more than $100. I only wish I had listened to my husband and bought all three of the bottles the store had.

If you're a woman traveling alone, or your accommodations don't inspire confidence, simply wedge a small rubber doorstop at the base of the door when you're inside the room. It'll be virtually impossible to open the door from the outside.

Save the flip-flops you're given at the nail salon after a pedicure. They make great shower shoes. They're lightweight and dry quickly, and you can throw them away at the end of your trip.

No longer do the many key chains I get as advertising languish in bureau drawers. I attach one or two at the ends of my luggage zippers. They make it easier to work the zippers and help me identify my luggage on airport carousels.

We like to buy shipboard souvenirs, so we try to choose a ship that's completing its run of an area--that's when merchandise is generally put on sale. Last year, for example, on a sailing in South America, all of the T-shirts, glassware, and rain jackets were 75 percent off.

Many tourist information offices provide discounted same-day booking services for local lodgings. My husband and I discovered this when we accidentally left a midweek gap in our travel plans between my husband's conference hotel and our B&B in Charleston. Instead of adding another night at either location, we stayed at one of the more elegant inns (normally over $200) for $70, courtesy of the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Before I visit poorer countries, I pop into a thrift store and pick up some toys, stuffed animals, and an old suitcase or carryall. I try to avoid toys like Easter bunnies or Santas, which could be offensive, and expensive things that might embarrass parents. The contents of my extra bag bring joy to countless kids who have never had a thing.

Easily packable, local specialty foods make great gifts for family and friends at home. At the huge Safeway in Kihei, Maui, we found a great selection of chocolate-covered macadamia nuts and Kona coffee beans in elegant gift boxes for far cheaper than in tourist-oriented shops. European grocery stores abound with gift ideas: British teas, French mustards and vinegars, and Italian olive oils are just a few examples. Just bear in mind that meats, produce, and other fresh items are a customs no-no.

My husband and I create personal cards (like business cards) before we leave home. We put our name, address, phone, and email address on them, as well as a picture of us. How many people have gotten home from a trip, looked at a slip of paper with a name and address, and wondered, Who is this? The picture helps link a name to a face.

When not taking pictures, keep your memory card away from your camera. It's a simple method to ensure that any photographs you've shot will be safe even if your camera is stolen. My husband and I learned this lesson the hard way when we lost 250 shots of Kauai.

If I plan to travel to several countries that use different currencies, I pack a few cloth change purses: U.S. dollars go into one, British pounds in another, euros in a third, etc. When I'm sightseeing, I carry only the money I need; the purses that I'm not using are locked away in the hotel safe. I avoid fumbling around in shops and mixing up coins that look alike. Plus,I always know exactly how much cash I have.

During a visit to Mexico City, I was sitting in a plaza near a fountain, watching the locals stroll around in their Sunday best. Nearby, an older gentleman was playing a concertina; his music perfectly framed the scene. I took lots of pictures, but I didn't have a way to capture that music. Now I pack a small tape recorder along with my camera.

Before traveling to any city, do a search on the Internet of the city name and the word "coupon" ("New Orleans coupon"). You will find many sites offering two-for-one, percentage-off, and dollar-off discounts. On a recent trip to St.Louis, we saved $100 at restaurants and attractions.

I teach a Tulane University seminar on independent European travel for first-timers. Until recently, I advocated Europe's great rail networks as the way to go. Now, with the plethora of budget airlines, I recommend a combination of the two. But it makes the planning stage—which I find almost as much fun as actually taking the trip—more involved. Thank goodness for whichbudget.com, a Web site that lists, by city, which budget airlines serve which cities. Then, to find links to all of Europe's state railway Web sites, visit railfaneurope.net. Each site generally features a travel planner and, almost invariably, an English-language option.

When looking for the lowest airfare, I've found that in some cases the best rates pop up when searching for one traveler instead of two. Recently, I wanted to buy one-way tickets from New York to Orlando for two people and came up with $87 per person. But when I selected one traveler, the fare dropped to $72.

When you're shopping for alcohol on any Caribbean island, ask if there's a Kmart nearby. Often the dis- counter is a short distance from the docks where the cruise ships tie up and has an extensive selection at prices lower than the liquor stores on the main drag. While you're there, pick up that extra roll of film or the sunscreen you forgot.

When carrying around my small umbrella, I put it in a Ziploc bag. After using it, I can store the umbrella, back inside the Ziploc, in my shoulder bag without getting everything else soaked.

It's unnecessary to make a packing list for each trip. Instead, draw up a master list with everything you might need on any given trip--from ski goggles to snorkels, slippers to saline solution. Save it on your computer. Before you start packing, cross out anything you don't need for that particular trip.

At a theme park, tie a brightly colored scarf to the handle of your stroller before you enter a ride. When you return, you'll be able to quickly pick out your stroller from a sea of look-alikes.

Even if you're staying at a standard resort hotel, take advantage of the day passes sold by many all-inclusive resorts (i.e., the right to use their facilities--such as swimming pools and beach chairs--and enjoy their meals for a day). The passes are primarily designed for cruise passengers on day trips but can be obtained by anyone for very little money. For persons staying in a less-expensive, no-frills hotel, it can give you the experience of a larger, more extensive resort for a day or two.

When parking in a crowded garage, don't settle for the first space available on a lower level. It's probably a half-day hike from the elevator. Instead, drive to the upper levels, where you can usually park right next to the elevator. This tip was very useful in Las Vegas, especially when checking in and out of hotels with our luggage.

Before you book a room over the phone, peruse the hotel's site for its "Web only" rate. It's often cheaper than the best quote you'll get by calling. Recently, over the phone, I was quoted a daily rate of $129. I booked the same room online for $89.

I travel with a mailing tube in my suitcase because I often buy paintings, drawings, and maps. My souvenirs always arrive home safe and sound. I just leave the mailing tube in my suitcase until the next trip.

If you've accumulated more souvenirs on your trip than you can carry, drive your rental car up to curbside check-in, then return the vehicle and come back on the shuttle bus with only your carry-on. This only works if there's no check-in line, but can save dragging your luggage onto the shuttle bus, across parking lots, etc.

If you're traveling with someone, discuss a central meeting place in case you get separated. My husband and I were in Paris waiting to board the Metro. He was able to board the train, but I was left behind on the platform. Having a plan saved both time and needless anxiety.

I always bring a small flashlight to hotels in case there's a blackout. The building may not be equipped with emergency lighting, and, if necessary, my flashlight will help me quickly locate the nearest exit.

To ensure the studs of pierced and delicate earrings don't get damaged, I put them in a film canister. An added benefit is that they're less likely to be stolen when left in a suitcase or hotel room, because thieves presume there's nothing inside but film.
