Here Comes the Snow
The historic, French-speaking city of Quebec attracts thousands of visitors for its annual Winter Carnival, when it hosts two night parades, a snow sculpture competition, and a canoe race across the St. Lawrence River (if it ices over, contestants get out and push) during the first three weekends in February. But Quebec City is worth a visit in winter even without a carnival. The quaint Upper and Lower Towns are filled with narrow streets decorated in seasonal white lights and crammed with boutiques, cafés, and 18th- and 19th-century houses. In 2008, the city will also mark the 400th anniversary of its founding by Samuel de Champlain with a yearlong series of celebrations.
