This month's winner

Ruth Auerbach of Los Angeles, Calif. Her prize: a five-night trip to Buenos Aires courtesy of the folks at Escapes Unlimited.

While I was planning our trip to Kenya, my 9-year-old son Micah expressed what he wanted most on vacation: a machete. "Over my dead body!" I said. Once in Kenya, we stayed at the Samburu Serena Safari Lodge, where we watched a performance of dancing Samburu warriors. After the show, three colorfully dressed boys approached Micah. One, Lepita, spotted Micah's watch and pointed to it. Micah took it off and handed it over. Micah then pointed to a sheath hanging from Lepita's waist. The warrior withdrew a gleaming, handmade machete. He placed it in Micah's hands, and without a word a connection was made. Upon returning home, Micah took his machete to school for show-and-tell, where he inspired his class to study the Samburu culture. We mailed batteries for the watch at Lepita's request, and when we heard that his region was having a drought, Micah's class raised money at a car wash and sent aid. The machete that I'd strenuously objected to ended up being a bridge between two cultures.
