'Hood Fisherman's Wharf, the city's touristy pier, home to a wax museum, shops and restaurants, and sea lions who sunbathe on Pier 39. The hotel is about three blocks from Ghirardelli Square, a chocolate lover's dream.

The Gist The 252-room boutique hotel was originally a warehouse, and rooms still have attractive, exposed-brick walls and wood-beamed ceilings. Newer is the nautically themed interior design: There are deck chairs and model sailboats in the lobby, and guest rooms are dressed in sea blues, with bedspreads that sport a boat anchor pattern. The Argonaut gets high marks from online reviewers for the funky decor, the helpful and attentive staff, the views from the rooms (ask for a Bay or Gate room for unobstructed views of San Francisco Bay or the Golden Gate Bridge—and even Alcatraz), and the complimentary nightly wine hour. But drivers beware: Parking costs $43 a night.
