'Hood The southeastern end of Waikiki, near Diamond Head Crater Park. It's a five-minute walk from the resort to Kapiolani Beach Park, whose shaded lawns and picnic tables are a low-key alternative to the crowded Waikiki beaches.

The Gist Fresh from a multimillion-dollar renovation (completed in June 2010), this 38-floor mega resort is well situated for families. The 435 rooms each come with an outfitted kitchen, a separate living room, and a private balcony. The color scheme is neutral, and windows face the Pacific Ocean, Diamond Head, or the majestic Koolau Range. Guests have the run of the sixth-floor recreation deck, with a barbecue and picnic area, tennis courts, and a pool; a free beach ball is provided at check-in. If that's not enough to keep the kids busy, snorkel sets ($3.50 per day) and boogie boards ($8) are also available.
