'Hood On a shop-lined street in Pimlico, between the north bank of the Thames and Victoria station. It's a short walk to Tate Britain and Buckingham Palace.

The Vibe Thanks to extensive renovations in 2009, this hotel stands out from its rather shabby Pimlico competitors. Fittings and furnishings are clean-cut and contemporary throughout; half of the rooms are in two annexes across the street.

Rooms The 83 rooms feel fresh and fun. Beds are draped in red, orange, and purple checked comforters; wood desks are big enough for guests to spread out folders and a laptop. Rooms at the back of the hotel (particularly number 505) are surprisingly quiet for such a bustling location.

Plus Plenty of quads and triple rooms make it a good option for families who don't want to sacrifice location for space.

Minus The three- and four-story annexes lack elevators.
