'Hood Hayes Valley, a small enclave with a trendy vibe. The main strip, Gough Street, is lined with boutiques, galleries, and restaurants, like Jamie Lauren's (a recent Top Chef contestant) elegant Absinthe and dessert café Citizen Cake.
The Gist The floral curtains and comforters in the 27 rooms at Hayes Valley Inn feel a little outdated, but online reviewers liked its hominess and friendly vibe. The private rooms are small, basic, and clean; bathrooms and toilets are shared on each floor (no exceptions). The communal kitchen is stocked with dishes for guest use, and free breakfast and evening tea are served daily. The parlor offers ample opportunities to meet other travelers and backpackers. If you're willing to brave the stairs (there's no elevator), snag a third-floor room, which have views of City Hall's gold dome.
