'Hood Flamengo, a residential neighborhood with convenient subway access to the city's famous beaches and hopping nightlife. The hotel is around the corner from well-regarded restaurants and Parque do Catete, a haven of elegant landscaped gardens behind the former presidential palace.
The Vibe The 12-story hotel retains some of the glamour from its '50s heyday, when Rio was a premier destination for international high rollers. Today, the Novo Mundo draws a steady stream of business travelers, but the staff is more than willing to answer questions from vacationers.
Rooms In 2008, the hotel's 231 guest rooms received much-needed renovations. Bathrooms were updated, old carpeting was ripped up in favor of parquet floors, and walls were repainted in earth tones. Its three categories of rooms are standard (no views), superior (lateral views of Guanabara Bay), and deluxe (views of the bay and Sugarloaf Mountain).
Plus Rio's largest green space, Parque do Flamengo, skirts the hotel. It's a fine spot for taking a morning jog or bike ride, or watching pickup soccer games.
Minus Street level noise can be a problem for light sleepers. Opt for rooms in the back or on floors 8 through 11.
