About this Hotel
Price From $170
'Hood Three blocks from Union Square and directly across the street from Chinatown's iconic Dragon Gate.
The Vibe You'll feel as if you've tumbled into Alice's San Francisco rabbit hole: The mosaic-tiled lobby walls are a swirl of whimsical abstract murals, and guests hang out on grand Cleopatra-esque chaises. Even the elevator is illuminated in electric hues of reds and blues.
Rooms The 140 guest rooms are on the small side, and bathrooms are an especially tight squeeze, but these compact spaces still make a statement with animal-print headboards and bathrobes, and bright artwork reminiscent of Marc Chagall. Hotel Triton was one of the first hotels in San Francisco to go green; its seven eco rooms have all-natural linens, filtered air and water, reclaimed-wood furniture, and biodegradable bath products. Twenty-eight pint-size Zen Den rooms with daybeds cater to solo travelers. The best overall room to book: #408, with front-and-center views of the Chinatown gate.
Plus The TVs have a 24-hour yoga channel, and room service will even deliver a yoga kit when the mood strikes you. Each evening, there's a complimentary wine reception with a resident astrologer and tarot-card reader (an additional $20).
Minus For all of the Triton's inventiveness, the fitness center is uninspiring and dreary.
