'Hood At the nexus of downtown’s Brickell Avenue, leafy Coconut Grove, and the entrance to the causeway that leads to Key Biscayne. A mellow residential neighborhood is only a block away, and the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens and Miami Science Museum are two minutes by car.
The Vibe Contemporary and artsy, with sculptures and paintings that are rotated frequently in public areas. It’s hard to imagine that, until recently, this was a drab chain motel. The small lobby now features a bright-yellow leather banquette and casual bar that opens out to a sleek garden courtyard with a pool, fire pit, water wall, and draped cabanas.
Rooms The 65 rooms on three floors average about 325 square feet and feel modern and fresh, with contemporary furnishings and flat-screen TVs. Many have balconies. The most serene are those facing the pool and courtyard; if you happen to get a room facing the overpass, they’re blocked by a thick stand of trees (and thus, are surprisingly quiet).
Plus A terrific price-sensitive alternative to downtown business hotels and those on Key Biscayne and in Coconut Grove. The hotel has plenty of parking on-site but charges a whopping $24 a night. A lobby bistro serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Minus The location—adjacent to a busy roadway and freeway overpass—isn’t exactly beautiful. And even though the neighborhood is safe and fine for strolling, there are no restaurants or shops within walking distance.
