'Hood Fisherman's Wharf, the city's most popular tourist area. The hotel is two blocks from the waterfront and within walking distance of Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square, and the ferry port from which tours to Alcatraz depart.

The Vibe Fresh from a $33 million renovation in 2009, the hotel has a slick look that's more W than Sheraton, with a turquoise-and-magenta color scheme, bamboo flooring, and geometric light fixtures. The heated outdoor pool is surrounded by rattan furniture. But the hotel aims to attract more than just the young, trendy set: A corporate floor caters to business travelers, and cribs are available upon request.

Rooms The same hip look and candy colors of the lobby, along with striped carpeting. Each comes with a small sofa, a white leather armchair, and an ergonomic desk area. Most overlook the courtyard, but if you ask for a southeast-facing room, you'll take in views of the Coit Tower instead.

Plus Spressi, an on-site coffee shop by day, morphs into a martini bar that serves sushi and tapas at night. Guests can sip their drinks at the outdoor fire pits off the lobby.

Minus There's a fancy new fitness center but no spa. Rooms in the back of the hotel face a noisy bus station.

Free Wi-Fi? Yes, in the lobby; in-room access is available for $15 per day.
