The Gershwin Hotel

About this Hotel

Price From $148

'Hood The northern edge of the Flatiron District, where brownstones and sturdy, cast-iron buildings start to taper off, and the high-rises of midtown begin. The Gershwin is well-located: It's not far from happening neighborhoods like Chelsea and the East Village, and several subway lines can be accessed nearby.

The Vibe Self-consciously arty, the hall and rooms of the 13-floor Gershwin are covered with notable pop and postmodern artworks. (Yep, that's really Warhol's signature on the soup can near the elevators.) Cast-iron stairways, dim lighting, and walls painted in bold shades of red and purple help perpetuate the bohemian feeling here.

Rooms Rooms are plain and haven't had a face-lift in some time, but artworks from the hotel's artists-in-residence add a touch of refinement. New laminate floors and flatscreen TVs don't entirely offset the old steam radiators and furniture. For true bargain hunters, there are hostel-style rooms with bunk beds from $45 a head. It's a good deal: There is daily housekeeping service, and each room has its own bathroom.

Plus Bring the party home: in its public rooms on the ground floor (which include a new bar), the Gershwin hosts events every month, including artist receptions, musical performances, and dramatic readings.

Minus The slightly rundown air here, although thoroughly New York City, isn't to everyone's taste.

Free Wi-Fi? No; costs $5 per day.

Credit Cards Accepted AmEx, Mastercard, Visa.

Details Doubles from $148; hostel-style rooms with bunk beds from $45 per person.
