About this Hotel
Price From $145
’Hood Located in an upscale residential neighborhood—think stately apartment buildings, grand hotels, and tree-lined streets—that’s convenient to public transportation and a strip of shops and restaurants. The National Zoo is just a few blocks away; hip Adams Morgan is a little farther.
The Vibe You’ll feel like you’re a guest at the home of a well-to-do Washingtonian with impeccable taste for art and antiques. The hotel feels very quiet and subdued—due, no doubt, to the absence of televisions and radios, and the fact that no children under 12 or pets are allowed. A former boarding house, the hotel has been tastefully upgraded with beautiful lighting, ceiling fans, central A/C, and granite countertops in bathrooms, yet retains its original appeal.
Rooms Clean and classy: antique bed frames and furnishings with a contemporary Pottery Barn feel. Though rooms are fairly small (especially the single-occupancy ones with shared bath), you’ll feel cozy rather than cramped. The decor takes advantage of original architectural details such as bay windows and dormers, and furnishings are in proportion to room size. Bathrooms are small—stall showers, single sinks—but updated.
Plus Quiet, convenient, and homey. The staff members are friendly, but you won’t feel stifled or forced to chitchat with them or other guests as you might at a typical B&B. There are six parking spots available to guests for $20 per night, which is a steal compared to other hotels around the city. Free breakfast that’s a cut above continental, served in an elegant dining room surrounded by art painted by previous hotel guests. Free brownies and cookies in the afternoon.
Minus No children under 12 allowed. No fitness center on the premises (the gym at the Marriott across the street is $10 per visit). No pets. No tubs; just stall showers. If you want to catch a game on TV, you’ll have to head to a nearby bar. Laundry is $10 a load (but they’ll do it for you).
Free Wi-Fi? Yes. They also have cables if you want to plug in.
Credit Cards Accepted AmEx, MasterCard, Visa.
Details Least expensive rates are for single-occupancy rooms with shared bathrooms. Prices are going up $20 per room in spring 2011, but there are always specials on the website offering things like $50 off per room and free parking—so keep an eye out.
