The Gist Catering to backpackers and surfers, this hostel (renovated in November 2009) is one of Maui's best values. Activities, such as a snorkeling trip to Makena beach, a tour of west Maui and Hana, and guided hikes of Haleakala Volcano, come included. The staff also hosts a party each weekend. Guests choose from a mix of dorm-style rooms and private singles, doubles, and triples (shared bathrooms are in the hallway). A shaded tropical garden offers picnic tables and hammocks among the mango trees. Online reviewers expressed some concerns about the cleanliness, but were enthusiastic about the tours and gracious guides.
