'Hood Camberwell, whose 19th-century charm remains intact with a cricket green, a parish church, and lively pubs.

The Vibe Brothers Jose and Mel Raido use brightly colored walls, tiles from Guadalajara, and hallways lined with Mexican film posters in this, their first hotel. Find your fellow guests hanging out in the lounge, and borrow an art-house movie or paperback book from the hotel's stash.

Rooms Bright Andalusian floor tiles, walls painted in sunny Mexican hues, kitschy faux–Louis XIV chairs, and colorful bedspreads give the rooms a Latin feel. As a check-in perk, guests receive a Green & Black's organic chocolate bar and a small jar of aged-habanero hot sauce made by the Raidos' father, Jose Senior.

Plus The on-site lounge has free gourmet coffee and tea and a self-serve bar with a selection of Spanish beers and spirits.

Minus It's a 30-minute haul to the city center on a combination of buses and the Tube. But night buses ensure that it's easy to get back at any time.
