'Hood Pacific Heights, a hilltop neighborhood of monumental mansions overlooking the bay. The hotel is three blocks from Presidio National Park, with hiking and biking trails and access to the coast.

The Vibe Built in 1903, the Hotel Drisco greets you with a living-room-like lobby and sitting area painted in calming shades of yellow and aloe green. Antiques, plush sofas, palm fronds, and complimentary wine and appetizers in the evenings add to the feeling of staying in a local's home.

Rooms The 48 pastel-hued rooms are surprisingly spacious and sunny for a historic building, with refined touches like white wainscoting, bay windows, cast-iron heaters, and marble bathroom sinks.

Plus Not only does the hotel have a basic on-site gym, but it provides free passes to the nearby Presidio YMCA, which has a pool and outdoor tennis courts.

Minus The hilly location affords million-dollar views but makes the walk home an extra challenge. Free town-car service is available from the hotel to Union Square, the Financial District, and the Presidio on weekday mornings. The #3 Jackson bus will take you to downtown.
