Puerto Plata's Casa Colonial Beach & Spa was the first hotel in the Dominican Republic to join the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. It's easy to see why: The chic white-stucco buildings and plantation-style furniture evoke a restored colonial mansion. Rooms at the handsome, all-suites hotel come with private balconies, flat-screen televisions, and Frette linens. When you've had enough of the hotel's 13-mile-long golden-sand beach, decamp to the rooftop sundeck with its infinity pool and four hot tubs, or pop into the Bagua Spa for an island-inspired treatment, such as a salt scrub that includes crushed amber resin and ocean salts.
