Price From $119
'Hood This hotel’s location in the middle of the Faneuil Hall Marketplace/Quincy Market neighborhood and right next to the Rose Kennedy Greenway park (created when the infamous, multibillion-dollar Big Dig project buried the elevated highway that once walled off the harbor) ensures that some guests will enjoy a mostly unobstructed view of Boston’s waterfront. The New England Aquarium and the North End are both just across the park, and there are many restaurants, bars, and shops—in all price ranges—just steps away.
The Vibe The owners (who also run the Charlesmark in the Back Bay) have modernized the Harborside (which was already fully renovated in 2006) to make it more boutiquey. Constructed of local granite in 1854, the building has an eight-story skylit atrium at the base of which a new lobby is being built. The lobby has been designed by local architect Dennis Duffy, and it will have a nautical theme, a bar with an outdoor patio, and a Starbucks-like coffee shop when it’s finished in 2012.
Rooms The 98 decent-size rooms here (starting at 350 square feet) feature king or queen teak platform beds, exposed brick walls, relatively new cherrywood furniture, and hardwood floors. The windows of some rooms (including some of the more expensive ones) face the atrium, instead of outside, so be sure to ask for a Greenway view if you want one.
Plus Another advantage of the location is that there’s a subway station right in front that serves the Blue Line from the airport, which is just two stops away. Check out the free tour of the Custom Tower next door (now a pricey time-share hotel), which will take you to the top for great views.
Minus The downside of staying in the middle of this popular neighborhood is that it can get noisy after dark from crowds waiting to get into rowdy local bars and traffic on the adjacent roads. Validated parking at a nearby garage is $28.80 per night.
Details Rooms overlooking the atrium with queen beds start at $119, rooms facing outside at $139, and rooms with king beds and atrium views at $159.
