’Hood The historic Charlestown Navy Yard, near an area that’s rapidly gentrifying with million-dollar waterfront condos and trendy restaurants and bars (as opposed to the—not entirely fictional—Hollywood Charlestown of bank robbers and bad guys). It’s a block from the harbor, steps from the U.S.S. Constitution and the Freedom Trail, and within fairly easy walking distance of the North End and the TD Garden, where the Celtics and the Bruins play. The MBTA runs a water shuttle to Long Wharf, a fun trip for a dirt-cheap $1.70 each way.
The Vibe In a graceful stone building that once housed active-duty Navy personnel, the Constitution Inn enjoys a setting that’s much, much quieter than those around hotels in the Back Bay or Faneuil Hall areas. Many employees come from the neighborhood and know pretty much everything about it (and will share info with you in some of the most authentic Boston accents you’ll hear). A YMCA shares the building, and its indoor, heated four-lane pool, 25 cardio machines, full-size basketball court, and fitness classes are free for hotel guests.
Rooms: The 147 rooms are large by any standards, each with either a king or pair of full-size beds, and there are even larger suites with kitchenettes. There is a microwave and refrigerator in every room. There’s also free Wi-Fi, and you’ll find some of the city’s best skyline views. The original country kitchen–style decor has been replaced by hipper white duvets, and the lobby is undergoing renovations to make it look like the inside of the Constitution.
Plus There are excellent restaurants within fairly close walking distance, including Olives, the flagship of the Todd English empire, and the 230-year-old Warren Tavern. The Bunker Hill Monument and other landmarks are also nearby. Validated parking is available at a garage a block away for a Boston steal of $6. Active-duty and former service members enjoy deep discounts.
