Since opening in March, this 15-room guesthouse has brought a cozier side to Bairro Alto, a gritty central district known for its nightlife. Filled with antiques and art the owners picked up on their travels through Asia and North Africa, the four-story space achieves an eclectic, worldly vibe. The hotel's DNA, however, is still 100 percent Portuguese. It's even named for two area landmarks, the Mercado da Ribeira, a popular morning fish-and-produce market, and the Rio Tejo, which forms the city's eastern border. Eight rooms face the river, while the rest either look out on the mercado or have courtyard balconies overflowing with lemon trees.
