Why It's a Deal In a recent Kayak search, we found a round-trip flight from New York City to Tunis for about $960 for travel in January 2011 (Alitalia). The accommodations would cost about $755 per person. So booking independently, you would expect to pay about $1,715 per person for international airfare and accommodations. For about $1,200 more, this package includes the airfare and accommodations, plus most meals, ground transportation, an internal flight, activities, and tours with an English-speaking guide, all in one booking. OAT also provides some experiences that would be hard to book on your own, like a home-hosted lunch in Kairouan and a ride in a horse-drawn carriage in Tozeur. Keep in mind that by booking through OAT, you'll have on-the-ground support.
More Optional tours during the trip are available from $65 per person for a farmhouse excursion and Tunisian soiree, $90 per person to visit El Djem and Monastir, and $110 per person to visit ancient mountain towns and an oasis. Add a four-night pre-trip extension to Marrakech, Morocco, from $1,095 per person.
