WORLDLY WONDERS

Photos: Secret Hotels Around the World

  1. Each year, Budget Travel scouts out undiscovered hotels in popular destinations from Italy to California wine country. Here, we pull the best of our picks from around the world, all for less than $200 a night. Featured here is the Albergo California on the Amalfi Coast.

  2. Seclusion isn't easy to come by in the Jamaican party town of Negril, with its sprawling resorts and thumping dance beats, but that's exactly what Rockhouse delivers, primarily to hip couples and families hoping to avoid anything close to a spring break experience.

  3. Standard rooms at Rockhouse come with garden views ($125), all with minibars, safes, A/C, and mosquito netting around four-poster beds. Guests can chill out at the 60-foot horizon pool, take yoga classes, or stroll along the property's serpentine paths.

  4. Amor de Mar's sprawling front lawn gently slopes toward a rocky point, where there's a tide pool big enough to swim in. Thrill seekers will be happy to know that Amor de Mar is close to the famed Montezuma Waterfall Canopy Tour, a zip line that whizzes through treetops and down over waterfalls.

  5. This Costa Rican gem, Amor de Mar, is located just a five-minute walk from the beach. The 11-room resort features dark-wood paneling and is decorated sparely, so as not to distract from the views of the tropical landscape (best from the second-floor porch).

  6. For people who harbor fantasies of running away and starting their own winery, California's Landmark Inn has the answer: two guest rooms right in the middle of a working vineyard, where, from your front door, you can watch the grapes growing and being harvested.

  7. In the town of Penzance in Cornwall, England, you'll find Mount Haven Hotel. The property is perfectly situated to overlook the island of St. Michael's Mount and the surrounding ocean, and most of the 18 rooms benefit from this view.

  8. The rooms at Mount Haven Hotel have a distinctly Asian feel with silk bedspreads and throw pillows covered in embroidered fabrics from India.

  9. The Riviera Maya is a favorite getaway of divers and sand-seekers, and at the Posada Que Onda resort in the town of Akumal you can do both—affordably. Large rooms have cool, white-tiled floors and are adorned with local art and artifacts. It's a 10-minute walk from the beach, but it's just 50 yards from excellent swimming in Yalku lagoon.

  10. Posada Que Onda is well-equipped for kids: Half of the hotel's pool, for instance, has a built-in shelf that children can play on and the hotel's restaurant serves kid-friendly, homemade pastas. Guests can borrow the hotel's snorkel equipment and bikes at no charge.

  11. The Sicilian hotel, Tenuta di Roccadia, is an agritourism paradise where guests can ride horses and hike trails. Arranged in long buildings draped in flowering vines, the 20 guest rooms are large, with sturdy wooden furnishings and wrought-iron bed frames.

  12. Roccadia's olive and citrus groves, almond trees, and sheep provide most of the ingredients for the preserves, liqueurs, honeys, cheeses, and whatever else smells so good in the kitchen. Four-course dinners ($28) begin promptly at 8 p.m. in the dining room.

  13. Go up—past the crowds, past the noise—to the tiny cliff-top village of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. Here, you'll find the intimate Les Deux Freres Hotel, in a 19th-century stone building that was once a school.

  14. The Fundana Villas, in the Greek Ioninan Islands, were born when a local man, Spyros Spathas, decided to convert his farm's stables and outbuildings into 12 guest bungalows. A guide for the Greek National Tourism Organization for more than 35 years, Spathas leads weekly botanical walks through the area.
