The official 2006 list
American Historic Inns, a B&B guidebook publisher with more than 2.5 million copies in print, has crowned the official 2006 winners (iloveinns.com). Its writers scour properties nationwide on a hunt for the cozy, historic, mysterious or extravagant, and this year's list counts as many affordable inns as splurge-worthy ones.
The historic three-story brick Brampton Bed and Breakfast on Maryland's Eastern Shore has rooms outfitted with wood-burning fireplaces and whirlpool tubs starting at $125. In northern Michigan, a couple runs the Grand Victorian Inn, whose rooms are chock full of wood and wrought iron antiques, from $92. The recently restored Washington Plantation's seven pastel rooms offer luxuries such as 1,000-count Egyptian cotton sheets, chandeliers, crystal and silver goblets, period furnishings, and slippers from the modest rate of $125.
To save more, purchase either Bed & Breakfasts and Country Inns, 17th edition ($21.95) or The Official Guide to American Historic Inns, 9th edition ($16.95), including a "buy one night, get one night free" coupon for a stay at any of the inns featured.
