Anyone who's gone hiking with boots past their prime knows that having the right gear sure makes a difference. And while you do want high-quality gear, paying top dollar is not necessary.
On the websites of big outdoors suppliers such as REI, Eastern Mountain Sports, and Campmor.com, there are sections dedicated to selling discounted gear. Backpacks, canteens, binoculars, hiking boots, and other supplies are sold for as much as 75 percent off retail.
It's like browsing through the clearance aisle of your local outdoors store--only you'll find a whole lot more inventory online. Buying over the internet understandably makes some shoppers uneasy. At least you can take heart that these sites sell brands you trust, like The North Face, Timberland, and Patagonia.
There are also websites whose sole mission is selling discounted gear and clothing. Sierratradingpost.com offers fishing waders, ski pants, bicycle helmets, and more.
Be sure to check out Sierra Trading Post's "bargain barn," on the left hand side of the website. Everything there is marked down by at least 60 percent, so it's easy to score some gear for yourself, or a gift for someone else. No one needs to know how much--or how little--you paid.
