Four companies are upgrading the big-brand experience wherever they go.
From the creators of the W hotel group, Aloft's 34 U.S. locations (and outposts in Montreal, Beijing, and Abu Dhabi) have self-check-in kiosks in the lobby, modular furniture in the rooms, and hip bar scenes downstairs. This Starwood offshoot is the first U.S. hotel brand to require LEED certification for all of its properties, currently in six suburbs in five states. Expect green amenities like chlorine-free pools and complimentary bicycle rentals and, in every room, a kitchenette with Energy Star appliances. Bringing a dash of urban edginess to the suburbs, the three hotels in Texas and Rhode Island feature loft-inspired touches such as exposed brick and industrial ductwork in the rooms. Newest opening: NYLO Dallas/Las Colinas in Texas. nylohotels.com, from $79.
Room Mate Hotels
Interior designers took an entirely different approach to each of the 15 hotels in nine cities, which include New York and Madrid. The New York hotel, for example, has white pod-like rooms with Jonathan Adler wallpaper, and some of the properties in Spain have undulating purple graphics on the walls.
