On Wednesday, November 10, more than 600 B&Bs; around the country are offering free rooms for active or retired military personnel.
In honor of the upcoming Veterans Day observances, innkeepers in 48 states and four international locations (two provinces in Canada, along with Puerto Rico and Namibia, Africa) have agreed to offer at least one of their rooms to a veteran for free on November 10. The idea for free B&Bs; originated with the West Virginia Bed and Breakfast Association, which helped in the creation of a new site, bnbsforvets.org.
Check out the full list of participating properties here. If you qualify and you're interested, make your reservation asap: All 16 of the participating inns in Washington state, for example, which has a very large military presence, are already booked, though at last check plenty of B&Bs; around the country still had availability and were welcoming vets free of charge. (The bnbsforvets.org site lists whether inns have vacancies or not, but you should still call or e-mail to get the most updated info about availability.)
BT's Online Resource Guide also recommends that active and retired military personnel who love to travel should check out Military.com, which has tons of tips for snagging discounts and taking advantage of other travel benefits that come with military status.
