Remember the pinkie ring with the "winking" eye you sometimes found inside a Cracker Jack box? Well, the "lenticular printing" technology that enabled that "eye" to change as you looked at it from different angles has now come to maps. A company called Urban Mapping has debuted maps for Manhattan and Chicago. At first glance, each map shows a standard subway map. Move the map and you can see a street-level view. Move it again and the names of separate neighborhoods, such as Chicago's Streeterville and Greektown, appear. Unfortunately, when I tested one of the maps on a sidewalk on a bright sunny day, I had a hard time reading the street view. I couldn't imagine paying the $20 retail price for it if I needed a pocket street map. But you may feel differently. Learn more about the maps, and where to buy one, at Panamap.com.

A clever website lets you find subway lines that you've ridden on and create a little online "badge" with all of the subway system icons. (See example, below.) Make your own at http://metro.b3co.com, an astonishingly easy-to-use site. Type in a city's name, and the icon for its metro system will pop up. Now here's a first! Only at JetBlue.com, JetBlue is offering discounted tickets for flights in one direction on particular days. This offer is for truly footloose travelers. As AirfareWatchdog points out, "Fares are as low as $19 (Long Beach to Sacramento one way on September 16) and range up to $99 (Long Beach to Boston on October 20)." Your flight back home won't be on sale, though. We don't know for how long this sale will be offered. So if you're interested, visit the site now.
