The city was the site of a skirmish early in the Civil War, on July 17, 1861. Union forces defeated a small and poorly equipped force of the Missouri State Guard in the first Battle of Boonville. It is part of the Columbia, Missouri metropolitan area.

Rocheport includes the Rocheport Historic District, an area with buildings dating from 1830 and which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Located in western Missouri, Lexington lies approximately 40 miles (64 km) east of Kansas City and is part of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area. It is the home of the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site, and of the former Wentworth Military Academy and College, which operated from 1880 to 2017.
