500,000 balls cascade down the Spanish Steps

Bagfuls of brightly colored plastic balls were unleashed from the top of Rome’s Spanish Steps earlier today in a stunt coordinated by Graziano Cecchini—the same man who dyed the water in Trevi Fountain red back in October. Interviewed on the scene, Cecchini said: "It is an artistic operation that documents with art the problems that we have in Italy."

Passersby stopped to scoop up the balls that gathered in and around Barcaccia fountain at the foot of the 18th-century steps. Police briefly closed off the area for cleaning and detained Cecchini and three others. Like us, they may be wondering which Roman landmark he plans to hit next…
