Readers lament dumb travel websites

About 50 readers responded to our recent post, Dumb websites are turning off travelers.

We noted that there's been a drop in the number of people using the Internet to book travel. Nine percent fewer people booked trips online this year than did a couple of years ago, according to the survey of about 60,000 Internet users by Forrester Research, which is a technology consultancy. Another top consultancy, PhoCusWright noted a similar drop during roughly the same period, reporting a 6 percent jump in the number of people making travel plans without the Internet.

The 50 comments from readers split between a majority of people who had been disappointed at one time or another by online travel companies and other travelers who had nothing but good things to say about the Internet.

Readers offered several examples of out how travel websites aren't nimble when it comes to special circumstances, such as funerals (Allen's story), or special needs (such as David T.'s story about needing a room for a person with disabilities), and complicated itineraries, (such as Kristin's round-the-world trip).

Brian L.'s story is a case in point of how travel websites are generally bad at amending reservations that have already been made--even though travel plans often change prior to departure. (By the way, Brian, I hope you finally got through to someone on the phone to help you.)

One well-put comment was from Tony W.:

If you are doing something non-trivial, the travel sites aren't very good at finding all of the alternatives, so you either have to be imaginative or persistent. To see what I mean, try searching for flights from SFO to Bangalore with a return from Hyderabad. Some sites send you east, some send you west, and it's nearly impossible to screen by airline or alliance.

Another problem is phantom, or "come on," prices that can't actually be booked when you click through. As one commenter discovered, a major meta-search site was recently quoting $175 to Europe, but on further inspection the ticket turned out to be much more expensive: "Then you find that's only one way; that the price may vary depending on the specific departure date; that one must add in various taxes; whatever."

Of course, I'm not saying the Internet is a waste. The problem is that some websites are not doing as much as they should to be as useful as they could be. They're losing customers as a result. And other industries have found solutions that online travel companies have been slow to adopt.

What are the passport rules again?

As of October 1, 2007, every citizen flying home to the U.S. needs a passport, even if you're returning from a quickie getaway to Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, or the Caribbean. The rules are different if you're driving across the border (such as from Canada) or sailing a cruise ship. You won't need a passport for those trips—for a while. [UPDATE 1/3/2008: A new rule is expected to go into effect by summer 2009. That rule may require U.S. citizens present a passport or a passport card when crossing the Canadian border and when doing other land/sea border entries. Until then, you won't need a passport.] Yet today at land and sea entry points, the best way to avoid border hassles is to show an original copy of a citizenship document, such as a birth certificate, and a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license. Just showing a passport will also do the trick. Citizens may soon be required to show these documents, if new rules go into effect, as expected, on January 31, 2008. For most Americans, the biggest adjustment will be for travelers to Canada and for cruise-goers whose ships sail into international waters. In the past, you could re-cross the border by car from Canada, or disembark from a cruise ship at a U.S. port, simply by saying you were a citizen and answering some questions. Now the rules noted above apply. [No passport is required, however, when traveling to Puerto Rico because it's a U.S. territory.] A note about children: U.S. citizens aged 15 and under who are traveling by air need passports. But if they're traveling by land or sea, passports are not necessary. A certified copy of the child's birth certificate is highly recommended, though. And if you're a divorced parent, you are advised to show documentation proving you have custody of the child. Many post offices have been set up to accept passport applications. Bring your application to a a post office or official passport processing center, with proof of citizenship, photo ID, two photos, and $97. As a general rule, allow about three months from application to receive your passport. The Postal Service website offers a passport application. One more note of caution: If you don't have enough blank pages in your passport, or if it expires in six months or less, some countries won't let you in. Pisa's leaning tower gets "toppled"

If you've been planning to visit the world's most tilted tower, you're going to need to exchange those plane tickets to Italy. The Guinness Book of World Records says you'll need to fly to Germany instead. According to a Reuters news report, the upcoming 2009 edition of Guinness has ruled that the record belongs to a church steeple in the small village of Suurhusen, Germany. The Slate Tower, built in the 15th century, tilts at an angle of 5.07 degrees, while the famous Pisa tower only tilts at 3.97 degrees. Whether this is something to celebrate, I leave up to you. After all, the tilting is generally due to shoddy construction and poor planning. But the fact that each structure is still standing after hundreds of years means that the work couldn't have been that bad, right?
